the problem with atheists.

Tuesday, October 23, 2007

Regardless of whether one is religious or secular in their belief systems, there are only two sources of moral and ethical authority one can claim.

Either human(s) are God or God(s) are God. Those are the only options. And atheists have to take the first option by definition. Which means that they are left holding the bag as to why *some* people’s opinions (the atheists’) about what’s ‘right’, ‘wrong’ and ‘moral’ are privileged over all other humans’ opinions of same.

I don’t wanna worship other humans, which is one of my secular reasons for not being an atheist. Also the racisms and classisms and sexisms of atheism don’t make the case for it as a belief system.

No atheist has yet come up with a reason why their opinion that child molestation is ‘wrong’ should be taken more seriously than the opinion of someone who thinks it is ‘right’ or ‘ok’ or ‘acceptable’. Unless, you know, one plans to worship the atheist as a god.

Arguments about why some humans are inherently better-equipped to decide what’s what than others tend to lead down unpleasant paths. Oh, eugenics, where art thou? and all that.

I’ll never understand God, by definition. But I always understand my fellow human beings, and I never get confused about power-seeking and egomania where they occur. Or self-loathing masquerading as nihilism. Funny how atheists don’t tend to be into having large familes, but snark at ‘religious’ people for thinking too hard about a Heavenly reward.

ALL other humans are just as pitiful and small and weak and fragile as I am. And that’s why I don’t buy the atheist argument that I should worship (usually upper middle class western white) other people instead.

[This was inspired by this angry diatribe against 'religious' people. Except the author of it meant Christians and maybe Muslims, but was too craven to come right out with it. I don't really tend to hear or see atheist rants against Wicca or Santeria, frex (although Santeria has quite a bit of Christian element in it). It's a minor thing, but it is irritating to hear atheists who really just hate Christians (and sometimes also Muslims) going on and on about how 'religion' makes them oh-so-angry. There's probably a word more specific for it (since it's not really atheism), but I've yet to see anyone bust out with it. The rant itself is amazing only for its templated quality, kinda like those scripts that generate romance novels or summat.]

Just by reading the first few words of this garbage tells me you have no idea what your talking about.Humans aren’t Gods,we’re just people.Humans do have flaws in many differant ways, but they aren’t disgraceful sinners or have stopped evolution.Where the hell do you find sexism, classism, and racism in atheistism? All of that is in most if not all religions escpecially the Abrahamic religions. We do beleive that child molestation is wrong because it shows that not only does the sexual offender have serious psychological problems, but it also causes immeasurable phychological, emotional, physical and social damage.Atheism doesn’t lead people to be nihilists or depressed, in fact, one reason atheism isn’t a religion is because no two atheists really beleive the same exact thing,or put simply, there aren’t really any dogmatic or absolute. Some believe abortion is wrong while some think it should be legal etc.You hear more atheists bitching about Christianity and Islam because they’re the worst, most dogmatic and most popular religions today. If the anceint Greek religions were most popular, you’d see many atheists debunking that instead of the minor ones, and just so you know, there are atheist critics of minor religions like Buddism(teaches people to be happy living in hovels since all attachment/desire is suffering….WTF?),Hinduism (teaches people are born into different classes or casstes and there’s not much you can do to change that.Just because the’ve passed laws to help lower levels,it’s still a big part of the culture.),Wicca’s no where near as violent as older religions, but probably just as unsupported(Talking to the dead, casting spells, and teror cards have been debunked so much it’s not funny any more.).I could go on for a very long time explaiming everything, but I’m getting tired.Modern atheists are so out spoken now because not only do religions cloud our judgment, they withhold sceintific progress, teach people to beleive absurdities, and basically harm us as a species.Quite frankly, you’ve shown me just how fowl and repulsive religious indoctorisation and Neo-Conservative hate speech leads to complete ignorance, intolerable cruelties, moronic statements and incredible stupidity. How’s that for a reply?

    Hi,

I’m an ex-Christian and now unbeliever/atheist and while reading your post here, must say that it seems you have made a serious error in how you define “atheists”. Anyone who does not believe in god/gods/goddesses is an atheist (whether they claim to be or not), atheism simply implies no belief in deities, period. Atheism doesn’t imply a group of people with a set of the same values either, many have outstanding morals, love their families, etc.

I do not worship people at all, how on earth can you conclude that atheists worship people? Maybe some do, but most people I know who are atheists do not worship anyone.

If one does not get their morals from a religious text, then obviously the only other choice is that humans do indeed and are capable of deciding for themselves what is right or wrong. Have you even read the Bible or Koran? Have you seen the atrocities and scriptures giving the go ahead to rape women? Kill babies? Etc.? Although one can find some wisdom and good morals in a few parts, most of it is disgusting and cruel. Buddhists have a very peaceful message within their religion, but no God belief, there aren’t any passages saying it is okay to harm another human being at all.

How do you suggest people live without a god belief?

Hi, I’ve just read a few of your entries, including all the entries about stripping, and I would love to talk to you.

I’m shopping a book with a stripper as the protagonist – not something I’ve seen published before, although stripper memoirs abound.

Based on what I write, and what you write, I think we’d have some interesting dialogue.

    All best

    Lauri
